Hey Neighbor. My name is Derek McCrum, CEO and founder of Hearth Creations and this is my story
15 years ago
I was a 1st grader at Eastview Elementary school with an entrepreneurial mindset unlike any of my other classmates. I started hosting lemonade stands, but not regular lemonade stands. I wanted to maximize profits, so I studied the system after each stand I held. My parents supported my vision day in and day out. After changing locations, revising my signs, posting on social media, and the introduction of friendship bracelet sales, I was able to triple sales. I fell in love with the business system.
As I grew older
I wanted to be part of something larger. I started a pressure washing company (powercleanpressurewashing) with the goal of delivering high quality cleaning services for affordable pricing, all the while offering the best communication and customer care. Once again, my parents were all in on my vision. While they didn’t help me financially, they drove me to my services (for the 3 months I didn’t have my license), and supported me any time I was hesitant to expand. Today, that company employs 4 people and has served over 1,000 happy customers across Northern Ohio.
Why Family Campfires?
I grew up in a household with unconditional love and support from my parents and my siblings. I see our country getting divided by the day. Crime rates are up, divorce rates are up, and families are falling apart. I believe that family closeness is the reason for where our country is today. I’ve had ideas for businesses before such as luxury dog crates, or stylish soccer “cleat bags,” but these ideas lacked purpose. I needed something that I would feel purpose in. How could I help the homeless, or educate the younger generation, or bring families together. That’s when it hit me, I need to be able to build something that families can enjoy together. Campfire areas were the way, and that's where we are today.
